Scottish Income Tax – How Is It Different?

If you live in Scotland, you pay Scottish income tax instead of UK income tax on your earnings. The Scottish Parliament has the power to set its own income tax rates and bands, which differ significantly from those in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scottish income tax is still collected by HMRC through the PAYE system.

Note: Your income tax region is determined by where you live, not where you work. If you live in Scotland but work in England, you still pay Scottish income tax.

Who Pays Scottish Income Tax?

You pay Scottish income tax if you are resident in Scotland for tax purposes. HMRC considers your main residence when determining where you live. If you split time between Scotland and elsewhere in the UK, your tax residence is generally where you spend the most time and have your main home.

Your tax code will include an 'S' prefix (e.g., S1257L) to indicate you pay Scottish income tax rates.

National Insurance in Scotland

It's important to note that National Insurance rates are the same across the whole of the UK — they do not differ for Scottish taxpayers. Only income tax rates differ. See our National Insurance guide for details.
